Making a choice about surgery

Surgery is most successful if it is a joint process, a conversation about your options and choosing what is best for you.

You are in control of the decision. Clinicians (doctors and nurses) are medical experts who will help you make a decision that is right for you.

This is known as shared decision making.

Patients who are effectively involved in making decisions about their care have:

  • Fewer regrets about surgery
  • Improved understanding of their condition and treatment options
  • Better communication with their clinical team
  • Overall better experience with improved satisfaction.

The Centre for Perioperative Care is a useful website including videos that explain shared decision. Their website is all about preparing for surgery.
