Bonding is the emotional attachment that forms between a parent and their baby. The process of bonding starts during pregnancy and is then built on and strengthened after a baby is born. Bonding with your baby will help to give them the best possible start in life. To help strengthen your bond, it is important that they are kept close to you, as this helps them to feel secure and loved. When your baby feels secure, their body releases a hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin plays an important role in regulating emotional responses, helping your baby to feel happy. The hormone is also important for your baby’s growing brain, particularly the part of their brain that is important for communicating and forming relationships with others. Skin-to-skin time, holding, smiling, and talking to your baby also releases oxytocin in you, helping you to feel calm and happy too.
